OVERVIEW
The basic format of the text is captured in the spiral graphic. There are seven different colors of the spiral, one for each chapter of the text. Each chapter corresponds to whether we are investigating one or two variables and whether we are investigating categorical data, quantitative data, or a combination of the two.
For example, Chapter 1 deals with the analysis of data for one categorical variable. Chapter 2 deals with the analysis of data for one quantitative variable. And so on.
Each color of the spiral (chapter of the text) passes through the four sections of the circle graph labeled Data Collection, Descriptive Statistics, Probabilistic Reasoning, and Inferential Statistics. These four components comprise a statistical analysis. Every chapter includes one or more sections on each of these components. By spiraling through these four components of a statistical analysis in seven separate chapters, the process of analyzing data like a statistician becomes engrained. While the early chapters may appear a bit overwhelming at first glance, by mid-semester students should have a firm grasp of the intricacies of a statistical analysis.
